2023, Acrylic, fabric color, and pigment on unprimed canvas.

Within this series of paintings, she has reflected on the paintings of jungles by the French painter Henri Rousseau to understand and reflect on her view and relationship to the world. Rousseau painted pictures of jungles that he never actually saw. Instead, he sat comfortably and safely in the botanical gardens of Paris and, almost mechanically, painted leaves and plants on top of each other until they finally looked like a jungle.

ARTIST

Anne Sofie Djernis

Anne Sofie Djernis is a Copenhagen-based artist, on the verge of completing her Master's degree in Fine Arts at Malmö Art Academy by the summer of 2024.

Anne Sofie specializes in painting, with a profound interest in how we perceive and comprehend the world through mediation—namely, through images and information embedded in various materials. In her artistic process, she starts with pre-existing images and texts encountered in her surroundings. Through these, she fashions new compositions and juxtapositions in her paintings, aiming to challenge and play with our perceptual experience.
